These days, there is so much pressure on children to excel in school. In particular, public school systems across Ohio have struggled with teaching children how to be successful readers. While diverse literacy curriculums and programs are abundant, children still continue to struggle. Why is this? I believe it’s because educational success in any field, especially reading, takes more than academic knowledge. It’s also about learning to be confident, believing in yourself, and being taught with love and purpose.
We can all agree that reading is an essential skill, but let’s face it. Kids don’t care about the future. They live in the now! So, how do we help our children see that learning to read is important?
We must foster a TRUE LOVE of reading by connecting with children’s interests and showing them just how fun and meaningful it can be to their own lives.
I believe my teaching method is successful because I create a space in which children can leave behind the grades and intimidating structure of the classroom and dive into the magical world of reading. The more children practice reading, the better they get and the more motivated they will be to keep going.
SO, what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!
MY TUTORING PHILOSOPHY
-
Tutoring is for Everyone!
I believe that no matter the age, everyone is a lifelong learner, which means that it is never too late to learn something new! Tutoring is not just for students who are behind on their learning goals. It’s also for students who are on track and may need more of a challenge, people who are interested in learning something different than what the usual curriculum provides, or anyone looking to expand their educational horizons. The great part about 1-on-1 tutoring is that I am able to tailor my lessons to the specific learning needs of my students, so they can reach their learning goal, whatever it may be, as quickly as possible.
-
Encouraging True Connection
My goal is to foster long-term, meaningful connections to my students and the community. How do I do this exactly? Well, I find listening to be a great start! I care about your learning journeys and struggles, and strive to learn a little bit about you personally to help factor in your own experiences with our learning goals moving forward. I am also a huge fan of fostering some good, old-fashioned connections through in-person tutoring. However, since I do understand that virtual learning is the best option for some, I offer that as a learning option as well!
-
A No Frills Strategy
As a child (and also an adult in college) I found that fancy terminology often was a barrier to grasping the main point of a lesson. While it may be required for teachers to introduce such topics as Latin roots, R-controlled vowels, or diphthongs, sometimes the terms themselves can be a little scary or off-putting. I focus on breaking these concepts down into normal language by simply encouraging comprehension and fluency IN CONTEXT. What does this mean? I believe students need to see what they are learning in everyday, practical, real-world settings. No fancy language, theories, or frills!
